English poet, Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803 - 1873)
When stars are in the quiet skies
Text: Edward Bulwer-Lytton
Music: Charles Ives
When stars are in the quiet skies,
Then most I [pine]1 for thee;
[Bend]2 on me then thy tender eyes
As stars look [on the]3 sea.
For thoughts, like waves that glide by night,
Are stillest when they shine;
[Mine earthly]4 love lies hush'd in light
Beneath the heaven of thine.
[There is an hour when angels
Keep familiar watch o'er men,
When coarser souls are wrapp'd in sleep --
Sweet spirit, meet me then!]5
There is an hour when holy dreams
Through slumber fairest glide;
And in that mystic hour it seems
Thou shouldst be [by]6 my side.
[My]7 thoughts of thee too sacred are
For daylight's common beam:
I can but know thee as my star,
[My]8 angel and my dream;
[When stars are in the quiet skies,
Then most I pine for thee;
Bend on me then thy tender eyes,
As stars look on the sea!]9
별빛 내리는 밤,
사랑에 번민하는 시인의 感傷을 담은 노래.
